Types of online blackjack tournaments

  • Freeroll: these tournaments – or ‘tourneys’, for short – cost nothing to participate in. There’s a collective casino credit prize pool to be won.
  • Buy-in: tourneys require a registration fee. This fee is added to the prize pool, so whoever wins it can look forward to some breath-taking rewards.
  • Schedule: tourneys have a specific time they start.
  • Sit ‘n Go: tourneys have a limited number of seats that can be occupied, and the moment all seats are taken, the tournament starts.

Playing blackjack: the basics

Blackjack provides the best gambling odds in all games of chance with a 50:50 win ratio. However, the game does require a small amount of skill. Aiming for the number 21 is the aim of the game and it’s a real thrill to get as close to that magic number as possible without going ‘bust’! Hitting 21 on the spot, using a Jack of Spades and an Ace of Spades, is known as a ‘blackjack’.

This game is played against a Dealer, except for the International Blackjack League, where multi-player tournaments keep the competition hot and exhilarating. In blackjack, each card has a distinct value:

  • Jacks, Kings and Queens – are known as ‘face’ cards – are valued at ‘10’.
  • An Ace can either have a value of ‘1’ or a value of ‘11’.
  • Two cards are dealt at the beginning of each round, but you can get up to eight additional cards as the game progresses.
  • When you tie with the Dealer – in other words both player and Dealer have the same end values in cards – then the round is ‘pushed’. If this occurs, you’ll receive your current bet back in full.

Basic blackjack terms

  • Hit: When you ‘hit’, you’re asking for another card from the Dealer.
  • Split: Splitting can be done when you are dealt two cards with exactly the same value, e.g. two Queens. You can then decide to ‘split’ your hand and play with these two hands (but you’ll also be required to double your current bet).
  • Stand: This means that you are happy with your current hand’s value, and you do not wish to receive another card, in case you might bust!
