Game of Thrones - Odds and Betting Markets
Source: Pixabay Lots of shows on TV are bet on. Many online gambling markets are set up to allow people to bet on the outcome of live events, much like sports gambling. Therefore, you tend to see betting markets for reality TV shows and talent contests where the outcomes are unknown but can be predicted. Increasingly, however, people are betting on dramas. Whether it is plot lines or which characters might get killed off, betting on scripted TV shows with actors is becoming more and more popular. Game of Thrones is probably the most famous example of this modern phenomenon in gambling. What are people betting on with regards to this critically acclaimed fantasy drama?
Who Will Die in Season 8?
Game of Thrones is full of assassinations and deaths in battle. There have been some key characters in past series who have come to an untimely end. With the forthcoming eighth season to be aired from April this year, many people are placing bets on which characters might be bumped off. Of course, with the scripts written and the principal photography completed, the producers of Game of Thrones have to keep key plot points secret and not give away any spoilers. As such, the bookmakers currently have Euron Greyjoy and Cersei Lannister as the favourites to die before the series ends. Other hotly tipped characters are Lord Varys, Jorah Mormont and Beric Dondarrion.
Why Is Bran Stark Favourite to Rule Westeros?
Westeros has changed its ruler many times in the course of Game of Thrones. Although he was a relatively minor character early on, Bran Stark is now thought of as the most likely to take the throne. Many bookmakers place him at evens to rule Westeros with Jon Snow being the next favourite. Other characters that are being backed include Sansa Stark and Petyr Baelish. Although Bran Stark is the out-and-out favourite, there has been little to suggest from previous episodes he will take over. The odds dramatically reduced on him taking over last year and this caused bookmakers to consider closing the market completely. Nevertheless, the gambling public seem to have got it in their minds he will be named as ruler. As an aside, Petyr Baelish is among the favourites for ruling the Westeros despite the character having been executed by Arya Stark in the seventh season! Source: Wikimedia
First Episode Bets
You don't have to bet on the outcome of events over the course of the entire season if you don't want. Some bookmakers will accept wagers on what happens in the very first episode of the upcoming series. For example, you could win if you were to place a bet on Daenerys Targaryen being killed in the first episode. A similar bet exists for Euron Greyjoy. There again, how about betting on which character will utter the first line in the new season's opener? Bran Stark is the current favourite for this wager, too. However, the odds on Tyrion Lannister are shortening so that is a bet worth considering. Other hotly tipped characters include Jon Snow, Daenerys Targaryen, Arya Stark and Ser Davos. If you fancy longer odds on that particular bet, then how about gambling on the singer, Ed Sheeren, who currently stands with odds of 250 to 1.
