The 2018 Golden Globes was one overshadowed by Hollywood’s stand against sexual misconduct in the entertainment industry and beyond. The night was packed with inspirational and thought-provoking speeches that have and will fill thousands of columns for weeks to come. The awards ceremony itself was, however, not without its memorable moments. Three Billboards Outside Ebbing Missouri, Lady Bird and The Shape of Water were some of the night’s biggest winners.
Despite huge budgets, star-studded casts and compelling themes, there are always movies that leave viewers disappointed. This year Canadians have had to endure plenty of near misses and major flops at the box office.
But it’s not only comic book superheroes who are being shortchanged on celluloid. Legendary mythical characters, tech and social media, epic global storms and miracle treatments should be the perfect subject matter for big dollar blockbusters.

He was too quick for a camera
Bruce Lee may have been as close to superhuman as anyone has ever come. His most impressive quality was, without a doubt his lightning-fast speed. Lee’s movements were so quick that TV and movie cameras had trouble capturing them. The result was that most producers politely asked him to “punch slower”, or recorded his sequences at 32 frames a second and then slowed his movements down in post-production.
Through the years we’ve seen thousands of movies come and go. Among all these movies, some got people talking before they came out, and long after they were released. Some of these incredible films are based on true events, which makes them all more interesting. The Cannes International Film Festival is in its 70th year and will kick off on Wednesday 17 May and run through to the 28th of May 2017. The first edition of the festival happened in 1939 and was initially held in September. However, in 1952, the festival moved to the month of May and has been held in this month since then. According to the festival website, the 70th Festival de Cannes ‘spirit of openness‘ will infuse the festival with ‘pictures of a world that dares to look itself in the mirror, to stand proud and to speak out’. We all have those iconic catchphrases in movies that will live in our memories forever: “Ya talking to me?” in Taxi Driver. “You’re going to need a bigger boat” in Jaws. “Here’s looking at you kid” in Casablanca.
