The Amalfi Coast Road
This dramatic section of coastline in south-western Italy is a great road trip to drive if you have limited time. At only 56 kilometres, you can do the whole thing easily as a day trip from Naples. There are numerous coves and cliffs to see as well as numerous great Italian restaurants, some of which have Michelin stars. This trip requires a great deal of driver's skill because of the many hairpin turns you have to negotiate.
The Icelandic Ring Road
If you are after a road trip which you don't have to drive back on, then the circular route around Iceland is for you. The 1,300 kilometre circuit affords drivers great views over the Atlantic Ocean as well as some superb inland natural features, like Iceland's famous geysers. Along the way, you will pass through charming seaside resorts, like Portrush, as well as the superb vistas offered by the County Antrim coast. The Great Ocean Road
Australia has many routes which could claim to be world class road trips but few would argue that the Great Ocean Road is not among the best. It includes beautiful sandy beaches, rain forests and high cliffs along the way. At 600 kilometres, you could do it in one day but it is better to take your time to take in the sights in greater depth, especially the charming Otway National Park.
The North Coast 500
Scotland's northernmost road trip takes about a week to drive if you are not rushing it. At 830 kilometres in length, it is called the 500 because it is almost exactly 500 miles long. As well as the north coast, visitors get a good idea of what makes the eastern and western parts of Scotland so distinctive. Be sure to visit a Scottish castle and enjoy a hike over a glen or two. The route was only officially opened in 2015 and has stunned those who have driven it since then.
Lake Superior Circular Tour
As the name suggests, this circuit goes all the way around one of the most famous lakes in the world. It takes four days to complete if you don't stop very often but this would be a great shame. There are plenty of things to see and do along the way, including a visit to the beautiful Tahquamenon Falls State Park and the fascinating Canadian Bushplane Heritage Centre. The tour takes you through Ontario, Michigan, Wisconsin and Minnesota, so don't forget your passport!
