Greg Merson wins $8.53 million in World Series of Poker main event

Maryland professional poker player, Greg Merson, won the World Series of Poker main event and $8.53 million, in a twelve-hour poker marathon on Wednesday.

Merson took the title just before dawn in Las Vegas in a no-limit Texas Hold’em tournament. Merson beat Vegas pro, Jesse Sylvia with a king high to Sylvia’s suited queen jack.

The newest WSOP winner went on to say that it is “nothing you could ever prepare for.” He now joins the likes of poker legends Doyle Brunson, Phil Helmuth and Johnny Chan.

Sylvia won $5.3 million for coming in second place and described the experience as: “That was nuts, man.”
